TUCSON, Ariz., (December 15, 2022) – This week, President Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law. The signing of the bill has been a long time coming and is a historic win for the LGBTQ+ community and their allies as well as for people in interracial marriages. The Act represents the progress we are making as a nation to be more inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals and families. This law ensures that married couples enjoy equal rights and protections under the law regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation. Although there is still much work to be done to ensure wider equity and equality, the Respect for Marriage Act is a step in the right direction.
The Women’s Foundation for the State of Arizona remains committed to working with elected officials on both sides of the aisle and helping pass legislation to ensure we get closer to achieving an Arizona where women and girls of all identities can thrive. We look forward to continuing our work with community members, co-creating spaces where our collective voices are amplified. Our research and advocacy efforts will continue to be inclusive as well as supportive of policies that help protect LGBTQ+ community members and racially diverse individuals.
